DSLR cameras

Digital Single Lens Reflex Cameras are probably the most popular cameras on the market. Anyone who’s serious about taking photographs will have one of these in their arsenal. DSLR cameras typically come with a single, multi-purpose lens – this can be detached and replaced with other lenses, depending on whether you’re taking portraits, landscapes, product shots or macro images.

Modern DSLR cameras can also record video – often up to 4K (Ultra HD) standard. Canon and Nikon are two of the more popular brands:  the Nikon D3500 is ideal for photographers on a budget and comes with an interactive “guide” to the various shooting modes, while the Canon EOS 4000D is well-suited for beginners as it’s reasonably priced and easy to use.

Point and shoot

If you’re looking for something simpler that fits in your pocket and is family-friendly, then you need a point and shoot camera.  They are perfect for holidays, thanks to their average zoom range of 3-5x and more rugged construction. Some models are even waterproof – great for trips to the coast.

Most of these cameras use smaller sensors, which keeps the price and size down but limits the image quality. The Fujifilm XP90 comes highly recommended – shockproof and waterproof to 25m, it’s easy to use and eye-catching – you won’t lose this one on the beach! Finally, the Canon PowerShot range is a popular option with 8x zoom and more style than the price tag suggests.

Taking things up a level

Camera drones are no longer just novelty toys. They are widely used by amateur and professional photographers due to their ability to reach angles and heights that a standard camera can’t. DJI is the undisputed leader in drone technology with a lineup of models for consumers, hobbyists and professionals. The DJI Mavic Mini is recommended for beginners; it is small and light enough to take anywhere but still has an excellent quality camera. The Ryze Tello is a microdrone that proves size doesn’t matter with its incredible software features.

Shake it like a Polaroid picture

Old school or old’s cool? Either way, instant cameras are making a real comeback. They may not give you the top image quality that DSLR cameras offer – but then again, their quirkiness is part of the appeal. For weddings, parties and social occasions, instant cameras let you capture the moment at the push of a button. For a real retro vibe, check out the Polaroid Snap, which is basically the classic Polaroid instant camera design updated with a few modern refinements. And don’t overlook the cheaper and more cheerful Fujifilm Instax mini 9 which is powered by AA batteries – it makes a great camera for kids to have fun with.

Sunlight, camera, action!

When it comes to action cameras you’re really spoilt for choice. There are loads of cheap yet smart options out there. It’s important to consider what you will use it for – for example, do you need waterproofing, shock proofing, slow motion, a front-facing screen or ultimate mounting flexibility? The iconic GoPro Hero is waterproof to 10 metres and offers a built-in mounting system. The launch of the DJI Osmo last year has given GoPro some serious competition, thanks to its full-colour front LCD display. If you’re a budding YouTube star, this action camera is great for vlogging.
