Why collectors are falling in love with vintage toys

Date

Whether you grew up racing toy cars across the lounge floor, battling action figures in the garden or carefully keeping your favourite dolls in perfect condition, there’s something special about vintage toys. They’re collectables, conversation starters and, in many cases, valuable investments – plus they give you a chance to relive those precious childhood memories, and perhaps afford those toys that your pocket money couldn’t stretch to back in the day.

Retro toys have made a huge comeback in recent years, with collectors across South Africa and around the world searching for iconic pieces from decades gone by. From sealed collectables to preloved classics, vintage toys continue to attract buyers of all ages.

Here’s why retro toys are having a moment.

Nostalgia never goes out of style

One of the biggest reasons people collect vintage toys is simple: nostalgia.

The toys we grew up with remind us of an easier, carefree time in our lives: Saturday mornings, birthday presents and hours spent playing with friends and family. Owning those same toys again brings back memories that newer products simply can’t replicate.

Many collectors start by replacing a favourite toy they once owned before expanding their collection into complete sets or rare editions.

Some vintage toys are surprisingly valuable

Not every old toy is worth a fortune, but certain collectables have become incredibly desirable.

Factors that can increase a toy’s value include:

  • Limited production runs
  • Original, sealed packaging
  • Excellent condition
  • Popular franchises
  • Rare colour variants or accessories
  • Rare misprints or other production errors – these can actually make a retro toy more valuable
  • Provenance information – any additional material or documentation from the time it was purchased, or the history of who owned it previously.

Collectors are often willing to pay a premium for toys that have been carefully looked after, especially if they’re still sealed in their original packaging.

Whether you’re buying to display or hoping to uncover a hidden gem, it’s always worth doing your research before making a purchase.

The hunt is part of the fun

Unlike buying the latest toy from a regular retail store, collecting vintage toys is about the excitement of discovering something unexpected.

You never know when you’ll come across:

  • A complete action figure with all its accessories
  • A discontinued toy line – perhaps from your favourite cartoon or animated series
  • A rare promotional item
  • A childhood favourite you’ve been seeking for years

That’s part of what makes collecting so rewarding. Every find tells its own story – and it’s a story you can then share with your own kids.

Popular retro toys collectors are searching for

Some of the most sought-after retro toys include:

  1. LEGO® sets: Older LEGO sets, especially discontinued themes and collector editions, continue to be highly sought after. Complete sets with instruction manuals and original boxes are especially popular. Because Lego sets retire after 18 months or two years, older sets can increase in value quickly.
  2. Action figures: Classic action figures from the ’80s and ’90s remain favourites among collectors. Figures that still include their original accessories are often the most desirable. Reboots of franchises or new movies can often lead to increases in demand for particular toys.
  3. Die-cast cars: From classic Hot Wheels to Matchbox models, vintage die-cast vehicles appeal to collectors of all ages. Limited editions and older castings can become standout pieces in any collection. Also look out for cars linked to specific movies or franchises.
  4. Vintage Barbie dolls: Collectors appreciate vintage Barbie dolls for their history, fashion and unique designs. Earlier limited editions and special releases continue to attract interest worldwide.
  5. Plush toys and character collectables: From nostalgic teddy bears to popular character toys from previous decades, plush collectables are becoming increasingly popular with both seasoned collectors and first-time buyers.

Blind box toys and trading cards: In every series, there are always one or two particularly rare examples. Plus, complete sets can also be extremely valuable.

Vintage doesn’t always mean expensive

One of the best things about starting a toy collection is that you don’t need a huge budget.

Many vintage toys remain affordable, especially if you’re happy with gently used items rather than factory-sealed collectables. After all, toys were made to be played with! Over time, you can gradually build a collection that reflects your own interests and childhood memories.

Collecting retro toys is a very personal hobby. You might choose to  focus on a specific brand, theme or time period, or simply collect the toys that make you smile.

Tips for new collectors

If you’re just getting started, keep these tips in mind:

  • Buy toys that genuinely interest you.
  • Check photos and listing descriptions carefully.
  • Tap into communities of buyers and sellers who share your passion.
  • Look for complete sets where possible.
  • Store collectables away from direct sunlight and moisture.
  • Don’t overlook loose or pre-owned items – they can still make fantastic display pieces.
  • Consider how you will store and display your collection

Most importantly, enjoy the journey. Building a collection can be just as rewarding as owning it.
