How to organise your closet

Having a disorganised and messy cupboard means you’ll take double the time to put an outfit together. Not only that, but you’ll end up wearing the same outfit repeatedly because it’s the first thing you see when you open your cupboard door. Not only is this frustrating, it’s also a huge time-waster (and doesn’t do anything for your sense of style).

We’re here to lend a helping hand and share some useful tips you can use to organise your cupboard effectively. And for the parents out there, we’ve added some hacks for your kids’ closets, too.

Another one bites the dust

Before you can start organising, it makes sense to declutter.Tackle your cupboard by section or by drawer and let your inner Marie Kondo do the talking. Rid your cupboard of maybe items and clothing you haven’t worn for over a year (if one of every season has passed and you’ve not worn it, you probably never will). A good rule is if you don’t love it or use it, rather lose it! Give your cupboards a good clean and wipe away any dust (and cobwebs!). Now that you know what you’re working with, it’s time to start organising!

Hang in there!

We’ll start with hangers – ensure you stick to one item per hanger as this allows you to keep things organised and visible, plus your clothes will stay crease-free when hung correctly. I personally like to keep all my hangers the same colour so that they look uniform and neat but using different coloured hangers can also be a clever solution to sort clothes according to type or frequency of use. Tip! Sort your clothes (not the hangers) according to colours so that if you’re looking for a blue shirt, you’ll find it with all your other blue items.

The right kind of storage

Collapsible storage boxes are perfect to store and organise little bits and bobs, especially if you don’t have drawers. You can use these to store your underwear, socks, swimwear, stockings, scarves and more. Instead of rummaging through your closet to find a matching pair of socks, simply grab the storage box and pick the socks you’d like to wear. Time waits for no pair of ice-cold feet in winter.

Storage solutions for your shoes

There are so many clever storage solutions for shoes. If you have some free space, consider getting a shoe rack to place in the corner of the room – this allows you to pack them easily and neatly while making them accessible. If you’re wanting to store your shoes in a cupboard, clear shoe boxes are perfect. Stack your shoes, see them clearly and reach them with ease. For smaller, less bulky shoes like slippers and sandals, try a hanging shoe rack that slots on your hanging rail or behind your door. You can choose from a square hanging rack or one with pockets.

Organising your kids’ closets

If trying to dress little people as well as yourself results in morning chaos, then do yourself a favour and continue reading. Less is more when it comes to clothing for children: sell or give away items that no longer fit or aren’t being used so that outfit options are clear and doable. Label clear storage bins with each day of the week and neatly place a complete outfit in each bin so that outfits are ready for the week ahead, no fuss, no tantrums and everyone can get out the house on time.

So there you have it, easy tips to keep your closet organised. Overall, you want to group similar clothing items together and make them all easily visible so that you don’t land up forgetting about pieces you could have worn and where possible, colour coordinate. As someone stylish once said, opening your closet should be like arriving at a great party, where everyone you see is someone you like.
