Smeg appliances: are they worth the money?

Date

If you’re in the market for a new kitchen appliance, chances are you’ve come across the very well-known Italian brand, Smeg. Smeg is an acronym for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla (how about that for a tongue twister?). They are known for their bold pieces inspired by 1950s designs. Two words come to mind when thinking of the Smeg brand: unique and expensive.

The Smeg Retro Kettle

Smeg makes two kinds of kettle: the Smeg Retro Kettle for R3 600 (with a 360-degree swivel base, removable stainless steel limescale filter and soft opening lid) and the slightly more expensive Variable Temperature Smeg Kettle, for when boiling water is too mundane a task and you want to be able to choose one of seven temperature settings. Perhaps the most desirable feature of Smeg kettles are the unique colours they come in: swoon over mint, pink, white, cream, black, silver, red and rose gold, then redecorate your kitchen to match.

The Smeg Retro Toaster

A cup of tea is nothing without a piece of toast, so don’t let your Smeg Retro Kettle languish alone on your kitchen counter: buy a matching Smeg toaster to complete the set! There are three options in this range. The Smeg 2 Slice Toaster and 4 Slice Toaster are available in the original sleek design, and features include extra-wide toasting slots with three pre-set programmes including reheat, defrost and bagel mode. Smeg’s newest model is the Smeg 4 Slot Square Toaster. With a more boxy look to it, it boasts two independent controls with two separate stainless steel removable crumb trays.
