Valentine’s Day

Date

As far as we know, Geoffrey Chaucer was the first who associated the St. Valentine’s Day with romantic love in writing. In his 1381 Parlement of Foules (The Parliament of Fowls) he says:

For this was on seynt Volantynys day
Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.

Or, translated into modern English:

For this was Saint Valentine’s Day
When every bird comes there to choose his mate.

And so it transpired that Valentine’s Day became linked with the term “love birds” for ever after.

It is also transpired that Valentine’s Day became synonymous with couples, thus causing infinite anguish to all the unattached singles out there, who were left wondering – will I finally be someone’s Valentine this year?!

But Valentine’s Day needs not be linked to romantic love only. Valentine’s Day celebrates love in all its manifestations. Love for parents, siblings, children, friends, relatives…

So, come 14 February, do something nice for your dear ones. The just-opened bidorbuy Valentine’s Day catalogue may be of help!
