New Year’s style resolutions

Date

You have surely made your 2012 resolutions about losing weight, saving more money, quitting smoking and being nicer to your siblings. Now it’s time to focus on the important ones: style resolutions.

1. Wear less black

There’s nothing wrong with all those little black dresses in your closet or your staple skinny black pants; but sometimes we get stuck in a rut and whenever we buy something to wear we choose the black version because it’s the ‘safe’ colour. Time to be more daring. Learn about your skin tone and what colours look best on you.

2. Experiment with textures

Interesting fabrics like tweed, corduroy and silk can add so much to a wardrobe and to your own personal style. Experiment with combining different materials in an outfit. All it takes is a bit of practise and a some know-how!

3. The Wardrobe clean-out

This is probably the most important resolution of all. A cluttered cupboard leads to an uninspired fashion style because you tend to  keep scraping off the same pieces of clothing from the top of the heap to create your outfits, instead of utilising all your fashion resources. If it’s stained, broken or doesn’t fit you, throw it out. If you haven’t worn it in a year (don’t include formal wear here) give it away to someone who needs it. Now that you’ve done the purge, it’s time to organise!

4. Challenge your style

Have you ever looked through a magazine or fashion blog, or seen someone on the street and thought, “Wow, that’s an awesome way to dress”?

This year be brave and try out new styles that you love.  The easiest way to do this is to create a fashion diary or mood board from pictures of your favourite styles that you find in magazines or on blogs. Pay great attention to detail when you’re trying to emulate a fashion style; the specific way a scarf is tied can make all the difference to the mood of your outfit. Most importantly, always add a little bit of your  personality to the outfit to make it truly your own look.
