A guide to spotting a fake Louis Vuitton handbag

Louis Vuitton is all about perfection. If you ever notice anything less than perfection on your purchase of a Louis Vuitton bag, chances are it is probably fake. By educating yourself about your purchase and knowing what the real thing looks like, you will have a trained eye to spot a fake.

Here are some guidelines to help you below:

  • Examine the quality and appearance of the bag. Louis Vuitton bags are made with coated canvas and the trim of the bag is leather.

  • The stitching should be perfectly straight and even. If you notice any irregular stitching or back and forth stitching on the bag this should raise an alarm. Sloppy construction work does not meet the standards of the Louis Vuitton brand.

  • Look closely at the outside seams of your Louis Vuitton, where the pattern appears on either side of the seam, it should match perfectly.
  • Always make sure the Monograms line up.

  • Avoid a Louis Vuitton bag with a tag hanging by a string. Louis Vuitton will never tag their bag with a cheap looking brown tag or a cut out piece of their logo.
  • Make sure the clasp is gold metal or brass and not plastic.

  • Lettering on the Louis Vuitton stamp should be thin and crisp. The “O” is very round and “T’s” almost touching itself.

  • The bag should be made from one solid piece of canvas. There should be no stitching on the bottom to join the canvas together.
  • The interior lining of the bag should be brown and not beige.
  • Be wary of bags that have plastic around the handles. The oxidizing natural cowhide leather does not need this protective plastic, and bags that come with plastic around the handles might be fake.
  • The country specified on the date code should be the same country on the “Made in” stamping.

If you are purchasing the bag online, look for sellers with a large percentage of positive feedback and comments. Ask the seller to provide you with close up pictures of the front, back, base, lining, date code and embossed Louis Vuitton stamp. If the seller’s product description makes you hesitant trust your instincts.

We hope that this guideline will help you with your future purchases. Happy Shopping!
