Grammy Awards 2013
The biggest names in the global music industry came together at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards held in Hollywood on 10 February.
This year’s Grammy Awards featured an eclectic list of nominees ranging from the electronic sound of Skrillex to the British singer and songwriter Adele with artists such as Rihanna and Deadmau5 also making an appearance on the nominee list.
The top award of the evening, Album of The Year, was claimed by the British folk and roots music band Mumford & Sons for their latest offering Babel. Babel was up against stiff competition from the American duo The Black Keys and their latest album El Camino, which claimed Best Rock Album award. The Black Keys had a highly successful evening and managed managed to scoop Best Rock Song, for Lonely Boy which is on the same album as well as Best Rock Performance. Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, was also awarded the accolade of Best Non-Classical Producer at the awards for his work with The Black Keys, Hacienda & Dr. John. Dr. John received further praise for his album Locked Down, which earned the honour of Best Blues Album.
Skrillex, who will be visiting South Africa’s sunny shores at the end of this month for three concerts, also made waves at the awards. The solo electronica act took home the award for Best Dance/Electronica Album and Best Dance Recording for his album Bangarang. Skrillex was also recognised for his remixing talent, as Promises (Skrillex & Nero Remix) received the award of Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical.
Taylor Swift was also featured in the awards. Her album, We Are Never Getting Back Together was nominated for Best Album and her collaborative work with The Civil Wars entitled Safe & Sound was nominated for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and went on to win Best Song Written For Visual Media. The song Safe & Sound is the theme to Disney’s The Hunger Games which was released in 2012. Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross where also awarded for their work in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, being awarded Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.
The South African legend Hugh Masekela was nominated for the award of Best World Music Album. However the award was eventually given to the Indian Sitar Virtuoso Ravi Shankar for his work on the album The Living Room Sessions, Part 1.
Jay-Z and Kanye West we also featured on the winner’s list, claiming Best Rap Song as well as Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Best Rap Album was awarded to Drake for his latest album entitled Take Care. A relative newcomer to the musical world Gotye had a highly successful evening winning three awards. His album Making Mirrors won the title of Best Alternative Music Album. The single Somebody That I Used To Know which features Kimbra won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance as well as the highly coveted Record of The Year awards, firmly placing Gotye on a level playing field with the world’s musical greats.
