How to start your DIY toolkit: Essential tools everyone should own

Date

Whether you’re hanging a picture, assembling furniture, fixing a loose cabinet door or tackling weekend DIY projects, having the right tools on hand can save you time, money and frustration. The good news? You don’t need a fully stocked workshop to get started. With a few essential tools, you’ll be ready to handle many common household tasks with confidence – and you could save a small fortune versus the cost of getting professional help.

If you’re building your first DIY toolkit, here are the must-have tools you really should own.

A reliable hammer

A claw hammer is one of the most versatile tools you’ll ever own. It’s perfect for driving nails into walls, assembling wooden furniture – and removing nails when mistakes happen, or when you decide that picture would look better somewhere else. Look for a hammer with a non-slip grip that’s comfortable to hold and has a sturdy, balanced feel.

Screwdriver set

From tightening cupboard handles to assembling flat-pack furniture, screwdrivers are essential for everyday fixes. A basic set should include both flat and Phillips (or crosshead) screwdrivers in a range of sizes. Alternatively, a multi-bit screwdriver can save space while covering multiple jobs. For extra turning power, consider investing in a rechargeable electric screwdriver

Tape measure

The success of DIY projects often comes down to one thing: accurate measurements. A durable tape measure will help you plan projects, measure furniture, check spaces before buying appliances (or that new couch) and ensure everything fits exactly where you want it to. Using a tap measure can also save you money when buying materials, as you’ll know in advance exactly how much pipe, wire or wood you’ll need.

Adjustable spanner

An adjustable spanner is ideal for tightening and loosening nuts and bolts of various sizes. It’s particularly useful for plumbing tasks, bicycle maintenance and general household repairs where different fastener sizes are involved. Being able to tighten nuts and bolts with confidence ensures that things stay put, and can help to prevent leaks.

Pliers

Pliers provide extra grip and control when your hands aren’t enough. They’re great for holding, bending, twisting or cutting wire. A combination plier is a good starting point and can handle a wide variety of jobs around the home. Pliers also come in handy for electrical tasks such as stripping the insulation from cables.

Cordless drill

A cordless drill will quickly become your favourite DIY tool. It makes drilling holes and driving screws far easier than doing the job by hand. Whether you’re mounting shelves, putting together furniture or taking on larger projects, a cordless drill saves both time and effort. Look for one that comes with a spare battery pack so you can charge one while you use the other, and you’ll avoid delays in your DIY projects (and having to explain to your partner or housemates why you still haven’t finished).

Spirit level

There’s nothing worse than stepping back to admire a newly hung shelf only to realise it’s crooked. A spirit level helps ensure shelves, frames, mirrors and other fixtures are installed straight and level – because you know it’s the first thing that people will notice.

Utility knife

A sharp utility knife is useful for opening boxes (hello, new Bob Shop order!), trimming materials, cutting packaging and tackling various DIY tasks. Choose one with replaceable blades to keep it working effectively, while a retractable blade helps keep things safe for kids.

Allen keys

Many furniture items and appliances come with Allen key fasteners. Having a complete set means you’ll always have the correct size on hand when it’s time to assemble, adjust or repair something. They’re a different shape to screwdrivers, so it definitely helps to have both.

Multitool

If you really can’t decide which tool to start with, a multitool might be the answer. Compact and flexible, these clever gadgets let you complete a lot of everyday tasks thanks to their multiple fold-out blades and useful accessories.

Safety gear

No toolkit is complete without safety essentials. Protective gloves, safety glasses and a dust mask can help keep you safe while working on projects around the home. It’s always better to prevent injuries than deal with them afterwards. It’s also worth keeping a first aid kit close by, just in case.

Toolbox

Save time and hassle on every project by keeping your growing collection of tools together in a sturdy toolbox. Look for one with a comfortable handle and compartments of different sizes for storing all your tools, as well as smaller items like nails and screws.
