On Thursday the 8th of November 2007 saw the culmination of some of South Africa’s leading online media kingpins in a tournament of the poker tables. Hosted and sponsored by PiggsPeak Casino, the event was conceptualised as a result of the loyal and avid participation and following of poker amongst South Africans and with the intention to raise funds for needy charities nationwide.

The Online Media Poker Event provided for a competitive platform awarding the key players in the online media industry an opportunity to network amongst each other as well as to contribute to an admirable cause worthy of their support.

Players included the likes of; Andy Higgins (bidorbuy.co.za), Ryan Bacher (netflorist.co.za), Neil Watson (digitalplanet.co.za), Albert Bredenhann (jump.co.za), Rudolph Muller (mybroadband.co.za), Ryan Bakos (edreams.co.za), Geoff Axten (ebucks.co.za), Gian Visser (afrihost.co.za), Chris Wilson (iol.co.za) and Jonathan Smit (payfast.co.za).


It was from the daring move by Chris Wilson from Independent Online, after going all-in on the last hand that put him into 1st place position, sadly leaving behind Andy Higgins from bidorbuy in second place (2nd place), Neil Watson from Digital Planet in third place (3rd place) and Albert Bredenhann of Jump Shopping in fourth place (4th place).

IOL representative Chris Wilson, winner of the Online Media Poker Event, chose the Cape Town Child Welfare to award the tournaments winnings to, of which tallied to the value of R10 000.

Alexanne Tingley, Marketing & Fundraising Unit Manager of Cape Town Child Welfare has expressed her gratitude and enthusiasm for such events and the earnest sponsorship from which they receive. Tingly comments: “GOs are all vulnerable this time of year and this donation will go a long way towards assisting children in crisis.”

The Online Media Poker Event will be broadcast on channel 393, the All Africa Poker Channel on DSTV, so be certain to check broadcasting schedules to catch the action first hand.
