Our current offer of Top 10 of 2013 wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t take a quick look at the top 10 international television shows for 2013. 2013 saw some great shows grace our screens, ranging from comedic gems such as Downton Abbey through to the fantasy world of Game of Thrones and the finale of the addictive Breaking Bad. Below is our list; the numbers do not necessarily denote a particular order of preference or importance. Let us know what you think of them on the official bidorbuy Twitter Page with the hashtag #Top102013.
1) Topping the list is the ever popular Game of Thrones. The popular HBO show released its third season in 2013, which covers roughly half of the third book of the A Song of Fire and Ice series by George R.R Martin. There is a myriad of facets to the Game of Thrones tale, involving religion, mythological beings and beasts, family drama and military conquests which span two continents. The contested battle for the Iron Throne of Westeros has emerged as a complex study of politics, power and leadership. Season 3 saw the exiled princess Daenerys Targarian emerge as fearsome leader posing a real threat to the established order.
2) Number 2 our list is Breaking Bad which aired its final season in 2013. The final season of the meth-centred drama begins at full speed – a machine gun, Walter White’s cancer, the toxin ricin, Walter’s DEA agent brother-in-law and a lot of illegal drug money. The finale of season 5 is undoubtedly one of the greatest hours of television to be released this decade.
3) Enlightened is third on our list, and the first of the light-hearted shows in this article. This series is a mixture of a number of different elements. It is partly a comedy and partly a drama with the number of introspective and out-looking elements. The second and final season of the show follows a New Age crusader fighting to expose corruption at her workplace while wrestling with personal issues.
4) Downton Abbey is a drama series set in the early 1900s that was originally released in 2010. Since then the British show has enjoyed tremendous popularity and has become one of the most widely watched television shows in the world. The series follows the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the post-Edwardian era. The series covers many historic events such as World War 1, the Spanish Flu and the sinking of the Titanic.
5) House of Cards comes up squarely in the middle of our list. Originally broadcast on the online streaming provider NetFlix, the series follows the battle for position of Secretary of State between two political rivals, which eventually leads a Congressman and his wife seeking to exact revenge on their enemies.
6) Next up, The Good Wife, is an American legal/political drama which originally aired in 2009. 2013 saw the premier of the 5th season which sees some epic legal battles as the Lockhart/Gardner firm goes about its business after successfully emerging from the trial and tribulations of season 4.
7) The hilarious Parks and Recreation is up next on the list. This ‘mockumentary’ of the Parks Department of a fictional town Pawnee, Indiana, aired its sixth season in 2013 and was very well received. The show uses a single-camera to create the impression that the Parks Department is being filmed for a documentary.
8) Next, we move on to mysterious and intriguing with Elementary. Elementary is a modernized version of the classic detective series, Sherlock Holmes, with some very interesting twists, such as Lucy Liu playing the role Holmes’ right-hand man (or woman), Watson.
9) Bringing up the rear is the classic horror story of Hannibal. The TV interpretation of the famous movie focuses on and explores the early relationship between the renowned psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter and FBI Special Investigator Will Graham who eventually become sworn enemies. With season 2 set for February 2014, the story is just beginning.
10) Last, but certainly not least, is the smash-hit comedy, Modern Family. Modern Family returned in September of last year with a host of new episodes and is set continue well into 2014. The first episode, “Suddenly Last Summer”, saw the long-awaited marriage of Mitch and Cam, as well as Manny going to visit Gloria’s family in Columbia.
