You may want to express your support for your national team. You may want to show your patriotism. Or you may simply want to decorate your car.

Whatever the reason, less than a month before the 2010 Worlds Soccer Cup opening ceremony in Johannesburg, the national flag is becoming a widespread ornament on South African roads. There are flags waving in the wind from a pole attached to a vehicle. There are flags on the side mirrors. When you display the national flag on your car, do make sure that it is in the correct position. Hung horizontally, the flag should have the red band on top; hung vertically, the red band should be on the left hand side:

Treat your national flag with respect. Among other things, that means that you must not allow it to touch the ground or floor. Keep it good order, and when its condition deteriorates – dispose of it in a dignified manner, preferably by burning.
