With summer around the corner and our winter bodies well on the cushiony side, thanks to all the comfort food that goes with winter, the need to get into shape, and one that is not round, is edging ever nearer. “Am I doing it right? Is that person watching me? Are they laughing? What am I actually supposed to be doing here?”….These are just some of the questions that may be going through your mind when you are at the gym. Exercising at the gym can be a daunting activity for some, and this can make any person uncomfortable, which is why exercising at home is more convenient and comfortable.
Exercises that can be done in the comfort of your own home can include:
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT): HIIT is an intense form of exercise, where you perform a few simple movements that target multiple areas of the body at a time. The maximum amount of time that it should take you to perform this exercise is 30 minutes every day. Each day you target different muscle groups, and you should try and improve the time it takes you to complete the full set each week. You do not have a very long resting period, which keeps your heart rate up and improves your fitness levels dramatically within the first two weeks.
Running: All you need is a decent pair of running shoes, but do not expect to be running the Comrades within a week. Take it easy, by starting off with a one minute run and a one minute walk for 30 minutes. Always have a goal in mind, whether you want to run a marathon, or just want to run up the stairs without feeling like your lungs are about to collapse. By having a goal, you will be more willing to stick your running routine.
Body weight training: Body weight training uses the individual’s own body weight and is advantageous in the sense that you do not need a lot of equipment in order to achieve your fitness goals. With an exercise mat (so that you are not lying on the floor) and a resistance band, you can achieve any fitness goals that you set yourself. Because you are using your own body weight to perform the exercises you are building your strength and fitness in a natural way, as opposed to forcing your body to lift weights it might not be ready for. With the aid of the resistance band, you can target specific muscle groups.
Yoga: Yoga is a form of exercise that can easily be performed at home. With the use of simple yoga moves, you can slowly improve your strength. By improving your strength and core abilities, you will naturally become fitter, more flexible and more at peace with yourself as it is an extremely calming form of exercise. You do not require a lot of equipment in order to start doing yoga. An instructional DVD would be ideal, as it teaches you the basics and ensures that you will not injure yourself. A resistance band would be a good option, as it will help you stretch and improve your flexibility. Finally, a yoga mat can offer comfort while you are performing the yoga moves.
You should remember that getting fit takes time and patience. You may not see it immediately, but after a while you will notice some physical differences. Do not feel disheartened if the people around you take more time to take note of the progress you have made. If you want to get fit and toned, it is your decision and you need to ensure that you are taking the necessary steps in order to get to a place where you are happy. Do not overdo it or put yourself down; treat yourself the way you would treat a friend (with respect). No matter where you start, know that you are always a day closer to achieving your goals.
