Preparing your garden for summer: the tools and essentials you need

Date

There’s a proverb that says that planting a garden is like believing in the future. At Bob Shop, we’re big believers in the magic of summer, and now that it’s just around the corner, it’s the ideal time to start preparing your garden. Whether your outdoor space has been well-loved or is perhaps a little, well, neglected, having the right tools and essentials can really make a difference. Check out our guide to what you’ll need – green fingers are optional!

Garden Tools

Can you dig it? Yes you can – if you have the right tools. Arguably the most important part of your garden is the soil, and with a little preparation, you can ensure that it’s ready to help your plants grow. A spade or shovel and a fork will help you break up the surface to let air and water in, and dig holes for larger plants. Handheld versions of these tools are also really useful for working in smaller spaces. Don’t forget some gardening gloves to protect your hands and nails.

Adding compost to your soil before the rains begin can really make a difference – the rain will push all those lovely nutrients into the soil, and your plants will thank you. The same goes for your lawn – adding fertiliser and lawn food before the rains will promote lots of lush, green growth.

Snip your way to happiness

Too much shade can affect the growth of smaller plants, so cut back any overhanging branches or foliage that are casting too much of a shadow. You should also cut off any dead or diseased-looking flowers and leaves. To do this, you’ll need a pair of secateurs or pruning shears, plus a sharpening kit to ensure you’re always making a clean cut.

For larger gardens, a compost bin is a neat solution to what to do with all those off-cuts (and vegetable peelings from your kitchen). Over time, these will break down into more compost that you can add to your garden.

Plan first, then plant

Once you’ve done the hard work of preparing your garden for summer, you need to think what kind of garden you’d like. Do you need more lawn space for kids and pets to play, or more beds where you can grow plants with beautiful flowers and interesting leaf shapes? Perhaps you’d like to grow some of your own food, or your priority is creating an outdoor entertainment space?

Knowing what kind of garden you’d like will guide you in your choice of seeds to plant. It’s worth doing some research as to what to plant and when, but with a little planning you can sow the seeds of a garden you can be proud of all year round – not just in summer.

Water is important

As well as food and sunlight, your new garden will need water. Depending on the size of your outdoor space, you’ll need a watering can or a hosepipe. Hoses are easier to manage if you keep them on a reel, while an adjustable nozzle lets you deliver everything from a gentle mist to a more powerful jet.

Summer… loading

Preparing your garden is just half the story… Once you’re summer-ready, it’s time to enjoy the beautiful green area you’ve created. That could mean anything from treating yourself to a new braai, to solar-powered lighting for long summer evenings outdoors. Pet toys and garden games will ensure that every member of your family can enjoy your garden, while patio or garden furniture will give you the chance to put your feet up and enjoy a well-earned rest after all that gardening.
